Deodorants and antiperspirants are products we use every day. We use them to control perspiration and odor usually in the armpits. The underarm skin is sensitive and can easily become irritated or dirty
The challenge in selecting a deodorant is not to irritate the skin and prevent odor. These are some points to consider:
- deodorants and antiperspirants are not the same. Antiperspirants help meet or neutralize the odor.
- Antiperspirants cover the pores, usually with aluminum salts to prevent perspiration. Some people believe that aluminum salts should not be used because they can accumulate in the brain.
- deodorants and antiperspirants have gained some notoriety because some people believe that deodorants may be linked to breast cancer. But this is a rumor, not proven.
- The best deodorants are those with no alcohol, artificial fragrances, or propellant gas. Alcohol and fragrance irritate the skin making it more prone to staining and do nothing to reduce odors.
For these reasons some people prefer to use natural deodorants. There are many plants with fungicides and antibacterial properties that eliminate microorganisms and odors, using them can get good results. These are some natural options:
- Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). This substance neutralizes odors. It is one of the most potent natural deodorants we have. It is used by putting it directly under the armpits. The drawback is that it leaves white armpits. You can mix a few drops of essential lavender oil or tea tree.
- Salvia. Helps reduce excessive perspiration. To use instead of deodorant can make a tea that contains one teaspoon of dried plant per glass of water and take about two cups a day.
- Radish. It is one of the best natural deodorant, extract the juice from a kilo (2.2 pounds) and store in refrigerator. After bathing apply it in the armpit.
- Apple. The apple cider vinegar is a good deodorant. Apply using a gauze in the armpits. No irritating to the skin, unless you have cuts or scrapes.
- Witch hazel. This liquid has many names in Spanish including witch hazel, witch’s beard, water and witch hazel. It’s like alcohol but does not irritate as much. Simply put a little on a cotton and passed under the arms.
And if you think that these options are very complex, have emerged on the market new products with brands that specialize in natural cosmetics as: Burts Bees, Audrey Organics, Dr. Hauschka, Tom’s of Maine, Lush et al. These products contain essential oils and plant extracts.
